Oral Cavity Flashcards
How doe the oral cavity perform an immune function?
IgA secretion
Tonsilar ring of Waldeyer
What are the general functions of the oral cavity?

Are we born with teeth?
No
When do teeth start to come in?
6 months
When do we begin to lose primary teeth?
Age 6 y/o
Why do we have baby teeth?
Important for growth and maintenace of space in oral cavity
How many baby teeth do we have?
How many adult teeth do we have?
20
32
For every month beyond 6 months the child is, they should have […] teeth
1 tooth for every month

Posterior teeth in the mandible have […] roots while posterior teeth in the maxilla have […] to […] roots
2
3 ; 4

The first, second and third molars erupt at ages […], […], and […] years old.
6, 12, 18 - 20s

What is enamel?

What is cementum?

Enamel originates from […] cells
Dentin and cementum originate from […] cells
Epithelial
Mesenchymal
What is dentin?
Also, dentin is the first part of tooth that is mineralized, necessary in order for enamel to minteralize on top.
Responsible for sensitivity –> odontoblasts that sit between dentin and pulp have processes that extend through dentin. If exposed by erosion of enamel, then nerve endings from the pulp that are related to these processes can be triggered and and cause pain.

What is dental pulp?

How are odontoblasts responsible for pain / tooth sensitivity?
Odontoblast cell body in contact with nerve endings
Odontoblast sits in tubule filled with fluid, changes in fluid can trigger pain signals in nerve, happens when dentin is exposed

Dental caries is caused by […]
Streptococcus Mutans
Why is it important to use fluoride in drinking water and toothpastes?
Fluoride combines with hydroxyapatite in enamel and makes it more resistant to demineralization thus proloning the lifetime of enamel and reducing incidence of dental caries

Describe the epithelium of the oral soft tissues?

What is the periodontal ligament?
Type 1 collagen fibrils running from root of tooth into alveolar bone of mandible and maxilla
