NS-Spinal Cord Quiz Flashcards
olfactory nerve (1)
function: sensory nerve of smell
test: sniff aromas
problems: anosmia=partial loss of smell or all
optic nerve (2)
function: allows you to see
test: finger=visual field test
eye chart opthalmoscope
problem: anopsias-visual defect
blindness-optic nerve damage partial blindness damage to optic chiasma
oculomotor nerve (3)
function: stimulates 4 out of 6 eye muscles, helps pupil to constrict
test: papillary reflex (light), follow up, down, side-to-side
problem: nerve paralysis strabismus at rest–>eye rotates laterally
trochlear nerve(“pulley”) (4)
function: motor fibers to superior oblique eye muscle, moves superior oblique muscle of eye
test: papillary reflex (light), follow up, down, side-to-side
problem: double vision
trigeminal nerve(“3 fold”) (5)
function: sensory fibers for face chewing muscle, pons to face (3) 1)opthalmic-anterior scalp, upper eyelid, nose muscosa, cornea 2)maxillary-palate, upper teeth, skin of cheek 3)mandible-anterior tongue, lower teeth
test: cold pain touch with oins, corneal reflex with cotten ball, open mouth-resistance and jaw movement
problem: “tic-dou-laureau”=stabbing pain 100x a day, triggered by brushing your teeth
abduceus nerve (6)
function: extrensic eye muscle-turn eye laterally
test: follow eye laterally
problem: internal strabismas=eye, medial (can’t move laterally)
facial nerve (7)
function: chief motor muscle of face-temporal, sygomatic, buccal, mandible, cervical stim: tears, taste buds, salivary glands
test: taste swatch, close eyes, smile, whistle
problem: Bells Palsy: paralysis of facial muscles, partial loss of taste, lower eye lid droops and mouth sags
vestibulocochelar nerve (8)
function: hearing (cohelar), balance (vestibular)
test: hearing checked with ear, tuning fork (bone conduction)
problem: lesions of cochelar nerve=nerve deafness, vestibular reagion dizziness, rapid involuntary eye movement, loss of balance, nausea, vomiting
glossopharyngeal nerve (9)
function: stimulate muscles for reflex swallowing, gag reflex, taste buds, posterior tongue
test: test gag reflex, swallowing, speak/cough, post tongue taste
problems: damage-affects swallowing and taste (bitter/sweet)
vagus nerve (“wanderer”) (10)
function: parasympathetic-motor fibers to heart, lungs, stomach, liver, kidneys, pharynx, larynx, moves food in digestive tract, regulates heart activity
test: test gag reflex, swallowing, speak/cough, post tongue taste
problems: nerve paralysis, hoarseness of voice, paralysis of this=death
accessory nerve (11)
function: activates sternocleidomastoid and trapez, moves the muscles to allow you to move head/neck
test: roates head, srug shoulders
problems: sternocleidomastoid paralysis=no sohulder shrug (turns toward damages side)
hypoglossal nerve (12)
function: tongue movement
test: stick out your tongue (goes to side=problem)
problem: damage= diff in speaking and swallowing
spinal cord
- From medulla oblongata to T12
- Below T12=cauda equina (many spinal nerves)
- Enlargements in cervical and lumbar regions
Anatomy of Spinal Cord
- Think consistency of string cheese
- Exterior white matter=conduction tracts
- Internal gray matter=mostly cell bodies
- central canal filled with cerebral spinal fluid
- meninges covering
two types of gray matter in spinal cord
- dorsal horn=posterior
- ventral horn=anterior
