A
Inflammation of mucosal membrane lining nasal cavity or paranasal sinuses
- acute = viral
- chronic = bacterial

A
- headache
- facial tightness
- tenderness of infected sinus
- nasal obstruction
- nasal discharge

Sinusitis Treatment
A
- for symptoms (analgesics, antipyretics, decongestants)
- antibiotics (bacterial)
- hydration
- hot compress
- surgery

A
- once afebrile
- does not obstruct breathing

Deviated Septum
A
Displacement of nasal septum (caused by direct blow to nose)

Deviated Septum S&S
A
- external nasal deformity
- unilateral nasal obstruction
- recurrent sinus infections
- nasal congestion
- nosebleed

Deviated Septum Treatment
A
- refer to physician
- control acute epistaxis if present
- do not insert nose plugs or any object into nose
- ice
- surgery for deviation correction
- DO NOT attempt to reduce

A
at physician clearance (2-4 weeks after septoplasty)

A
lateral or frontal direction trauma to nose (lateral forces cause more deformity)

- deformity
- bilateral epistaxis
- TTP
- swelling

A
- control bleeding
- refer
- surgical correction if needed

A
may RTP wearing facial protection w/in a few days if fracture was uncomplicated

A
“Nosebleeds” following or in absence of trauma

Epistaxis Treatment
A
- direct pressure
- tilt head forward
- ice
- gauze plug
- DO NOT blow nose for 2 hrs
