NMSK- EQUINE EXAMINATION Flashcards
What are the main principles of a musculoskeletal examination
Taking a history
Static evaluation
Dynamic evaluation
What q’s should you ask when taking history
Age Breed/type Amount of exercise Lame for how long Weight bearing Did it start after specific event
What does the static evaluation involve
Assessment of : Conformation Hoof conformation and balance Muscle development and symmetry including the back and pelvis Joint range of motion Palpation
What does good hoof conformation include
When viewed from front :
Medio- lateral balance ( slope of medial and lateral walls ) is identical
When viewed from side - hoof pattern angle should be 45 degrees
What does a dynamic evaluation involve
Watching the horse in walk and trot moving in a straight line from in front, from the side and from behind
Lunging on hard and soft surfaces in both directions
What does a lameness evaluation need to establish
Presence or absence of lameness
Affected limb
Location of pain
Cause of pain
What are the main points to assess in a MSK exam
Poll and pelvis - asymmetric movement
Joint flexion
Hooves- landing and tracking up
