What is lameness

A

Consists of a departure from the normal gait, occasioned by disease or injury situated in some part of the limbs or trunk, and is usually accompanied by pain

How do you identify lameness in the horse

A

Most easily seen is nodding of head at walk and trot (forelimb affected).
Asymmetric movement of the tuber coaxed indicates a hind limb lameness

A

Stiffness when moving and difficulty jumping or rising. Altered gait

  • have the animal walk and trot in a straight line- observe from in front and behind (head down = sound)
  • affected limb if lameness bad will spend less time in contact with the ground
