NEWBORN HEARNING TEST Flashcards
This screening process is a diagnostic test that identifies any problems or issues with regard
to the baby’s hearing and ears.
Newborn Hearing Test
Hearing screening for babies should be done by an
audiologist
When is it administered?
before being discharged if the baby is born in a hospital. Otherwise, it will be done within the first few weeks.
The test should be done within the ___of life, although it can be done as early as 3 months.
first 4 to 5 weeks
A small ear probe is placed in the baby’s ear canal.
Gentle clicking sounds are played.
The ear will bounce back an echo.
Automated Otoacoustic Emission (AOAE) test
The possibility of having unclear results could indicate that when the test was performed:
(AOAE)
rhe infant was disturbed.
There was noise in the background.
The ear is full of fluid or has a temporary obstruction.
In case of unclear results, a second test will be done.
Same as the first test (AOAE)
Different test – Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) test
Three (3) little sensors/electrodes are placed on the infant’s head/forehead and one behind each ear
Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) test:
How is it done?
Gentle clicking sounds are played.
The doctors can measure the response from the electrodes
This test will take between 5 and 15 minutes to complete.
While the AABR and AOAE tests are common and effective, it is possible that the tests will overlook some tones. This means that the infant could be
partially deaf.
OAE
Good ear piece fit ensuring a 1/4 turn, staying securely w/o support
AAB
Skinm preparation 3-5 wipes in 1 direction using prep pad on the 3 sensor sites
Before three (3) months of age, all babies who do not pass the first screening should have a
comprehensive hearing test.
Early detection of a hearing loss and enrollment in a program for babies with hearing loss (starting when the baby is six (6) months old) allows a child to:
Improve interpersonal communication skills
Perform well in school
Get along with the other kids
ccording to studies, if any hearing problems are detected and assistance and intervention begin by ______, the child will have the highest chance of developing spoken language at par with hearing peer
6 months of age
