Digestive System Flashcards
digestive tract separates from the respiratory tract rapidly
4th wee
intestine becomes too large to be contained by the abdomen; a portion of the intestine is pushed into the base of the umbilical cord where it remains until 10th week or until the abdominal cavity has grown large enough to accommodate the bulky intestine, rotates 180 degrees. failure to rotate results in inadequate mesentery attachments possibly leading to volvulus of the intestine in the newborn
6th week
a congenital anomaly when intestine remains outside the abdomen in the base of the cord
OMPHALOCELE
a congenital anomaly where the original midline
fusion that occurred at the early cell stage is incomplete, causing the intestine to spill out of the abdomen
GASTROSCHISIS
a collection of cellular wastes, bile, fats, mucoproteins, mucopolysaccharides and portion of the VERNIX CASEOSA (lubricating substance that forms in the fetal) accumulates in the intestine
16th week: MECONIUM:
active throughout intrauterine life + functions as a filter between incoming blood and fetal circulation + serves as deposit site for fetal stores such as iron and glycogen <SIDE NOTE: 36 weeks is preterm, 37 weeks is term>
