Mother/caregiver has no capacity to delay gratification, working on pleasure principle.
Startle response to loud noises, no concept of death.
Seeks comfort from security objects like blanket, warmth cuddling, favourable toy.
SOLITARY – toys that stimulate human senses.
1-3 mos. – mobiles, mirror, music box, rattles, & stuff toys.
4-6 mos. – squeeze toys, busy box, “peek-a-boo”.
7-9 mos. – large blocks, balls & bath toys.
10-12 mos. – building blocks push & pull toys.
Speaks softly to infant, allow infant to identify you with parent/caregiver.
Use touch, distraction, hold infant, let infant sit on parents lap.
INFANTS
Parents accept reality, can wait a little longer.
No concept of death.
PARALLEL Play – play that provides leg muscle development, fine/ finger development.
Blocks, pots/pans, puzzle, push & pull toys/car/trucks.
Allows toddler to stay with parents, focus on favourite toy, ask parents help praise cooperation use play.
TOODLER
Mother & Father: basic family.
Knows difference between sexes.
See death as temporary/reversible.
Believe they cause death as punishment or wish fulfilment.
ASSOCIATIVE – toys that promote imagination & cooperation.
Doll house, doctor/ nurse kit, kitchen utensils, stethoscope, puppet & play.
Use simple questions/ words without double meaning.
PRE-SCHOOL
Peer group, same sex group.
See death as real and irreversible. View it as destructive frightening, believe they can avoid it by being good.
COOPERATIVE – toys that promote socialization as games, puzzles, word scrabble, books & sports.
Offer explanation, provide demonstration, explains procedure, teach about body maintain privacy.
SCHOOL AGE
Peer group – Hetero(boy-girl) sexual relationship.
See death as final, irreversible, & universal. Respond by feeling sad, crying, & lonely.
RECREATION – sports games (ball games), cycling, swimming, etc.
Maintain privacy confidentiality – encourage open honest communication. Be non-judgemental, use open-minded question.
