Neuroscience - Nervous System Flashcards
Nervous system
Fragile, hard to heal, most damage is permanent
Central nervous system
Decision making organ
Brain
Part of central nervous system. Consciousness/life-sustaining
Spinal cord
Part of central nervous system. Reflexes, movement.
Peripheral nervous system
Transmits central nervous system decisions to other body parts.
Somatic nervous system
Part of peripheral nervous system. Conscious information flowing to/from the central nervous system, voluntary movement.
Autonomic nervous system
Part of peripheral nervous system. Automatic actions of internal organs and glands.
Sensory (afferent) neurons
Part of peripheral, then somatic system. Carries sensory information to the central nervous system.
Motor (efferent) neurons
Part of peripheral, then somatic system. Carries information from the central nervous system to the skeletal muscles for actions.
Sympathetic division
Part of the peripheral, then autonomic system. Arousal (adrenaline/instant reaction/”stepping on the gas”)
Parasympathetic division
Part of the peripheral, then autonomic system. Calming (cortisol/”stepping on the breaks”/slowing down)
Reflex arc
Neural pathway that controls a reflex.
Ex. Figure touches fire, sensation routed to spinal cord through sensory neurons, order sent from spinal cord back through motor neurons, hard jerks away from fire.
