Altered States of Consciousness (Sleep disorders, hypnosis, etc.) 2/3 Flashcards
Sleepwalking (somnambulism)
Someone does an activity like walking while asleep. Mostly occurs in children with a genetic component and the conflicted have no memory of what took place while they were asleep.
Sleep apnea
Commonly caused by being overweight. You stop breathing while sleeping and wake up with a gasp as though you had been drowning.
Insomnia
It disrupts the sleep cycle by making it hard to fall asleep and stay asleep. Can be self-induced, caused by worries, stress, etc.
Narcolepsy
You randomly fall into REM sleep during the day.
Cataplexy
Muscles go weak and limp. Symptom of narcolepsy.
Nightmares/terrors
Nightmares- Dreams that cause fear.
Night terrors- Cause fear. You can look awake but are still asleep. Usually in children with an unknown cause.
Is hypnosis real or imagined?
It depends on who you’re working with.
Hypnosis
An altered state of consciousness involving focus and reduction of peripheral awareness used for suggestion. It only works if the subject is willing. Is a deep form of relaxation.
Divided-consciousness theory
Hypnosis is caused by a split awareness.
Social-influence theory
We subconsciously act how we think we’re supposed to act, therefore making hypnosis work.
What is hypnosis similar to?
Stage one sleep (NREM-1). You can interact with the world like in daydreams, but it’s not the same.
What can hypnosis be used for?
Minor pain control, weight control/loss, certain types of minor addictions, etc.
Posthypnotic suggestion
Suggestion one is given while under hypnosis but takes effect after they wake up. It sinks into the subconscious.
Can hypnosis be used to access suppressed memories?
No, memories the brain has forgotten can’t be remembered at that point.
What is meditation for?
Relaxing and focusing. Is common in religion (Ex. yoga, prayers, etc.) It helps control breathing and blood pressure.
