Neurology Flashcards
neuritis
neuritis, inflammation of nerve
neuroma
neuroma, tumor of nerve cells
poliomyelitis
poliomielitis, inflammation of gray matter of spinal cord, i.e. polio
polyneuritis
polineuritis, inflammation of many nerves
subdural hematoma
hematoma subdural, collection of blood (resulting from broken vessel) below dura matter
Alzheimer disease
enfermedad/mal de Alzheimer o demencia senil de tipo Alzheimer
Bell’s palsy
parálisis de Bell or parálisis facial periférica idiopática
sciatica
ciática, inflammation of sciatic nerve which cause pain in thigh, foot and toes
multiple sclerosis (MS)
esclerosis múltiple, degenerative disease–sclerotic patches on brain and spinal cord
cerebral palsy
parálisis cerebral infantil, lack of muscle control, partial paralysis caused by brain defect or lesion present at birth or shortly after
encephalitis
encefalitis, inflammation of brain
meningitis
meningitis, inflammation of meninges
neuralgia
neuralgia, pain in nerve
syncope
síncope, fainting/sudden loss of consciousness
paraplegia
paraplegia, paralysis from the waist down
gait
marcha
concussion
conmoción cerebral
preictal
preictal, before seizure or attack
dysphasia
disfasia, difficulty speaking
aphasia
afasia, loss of speech
transient ischemic attack (TIA)
accidente isquémico transitorio, sudden deficient supply of blood to brain lasting short time–symptoms are similar to stroke but temporary; usually a complete recovery AKA mini-stroke
cerebral angiography
arteriografía cerebral, radiographic image of blood vessels in brain
postictal state
estupor poscrítico, period after seizure/attack
tardive dyskinesia
discinesia tardía, disorder resulting in involuntary, repetitive body movements (tardive = slow or belated onset)
pinched nerve
nervio atrapado
twitch
contracción espasmódica
nerve damage
daño al nervio, daño neural
CVA/stroke
cerebro-vascular accident. causes: blot clot obstructing blood supply leading to part of brain; bleed in brain. Without oxygen, affected part of brain will stop functioning or function less well.
Motor Neuron Disease MND
Degen of nerve cells leads to progressive muscle wasting. Includes amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ALS/Lou Gehrig’s disease
Muscular Dystrophy MD
Grp of inherited disorders of motor syst leads to worsening muscle wkness & loss
Myasthenia gravis
Autoimmune disorder affecting motor system. Antibodies attack junction betw nerves & muscles, nerve signal not transfered to muscles.
Parkinson’s disease
degeneration of the part of the brain which leads to lower levels of dopamine, which consequently means that nerve signals cannot be transmitted properly
abscess in the brain
absceso cerebral
Asperger’s disorder
Síndrome de Asperger
brainstem
cuello encefálico
convulsions
convulsiónes
CVA; stroke–when poor blood flow to the brain results in cell death
Embolia cerebral o accidente cerebrovascular
Epilepsy or Grand Mal
epilepsia
