Nervous System Flashcards
Arachnoid
Aracnoides, middle layer of meninges
Cerebrum
Cerebro, largest portion of the brain; right & left hemispheres; interprets general senses (sight, hearing, intellect, memory, emotion)
Neuron
Neurona, conducts nerve impulses
Cortisol
Corticoesteroide endógeno, hormone secreted by adrenal cortex; increases glucose level for energy, AKA hydrocortisone = hidrocortisona
Cerebellum
Cerebelo, rombencéfalo; under posterior portion of cerebrum; assists in coordination of skeletal muscles & maintaining balance
Meninges
Meninges, 3 layers of membrane covering brain and spinal cord
Cerebrospinal fluid
Líquido cefalorraquídio o cerebroespinal; flows through subarachnoid space (espacio subaracnoideo); cushions brain & spinal cord
dendrite; a short branched extension of a nerve cell, along which impulses received from other cells at synapses are transmitted to the cell body
dendrita
diencephalon; the caudal (posterior) part of the forebrain, containing the epithalamus, thalamus, hypothalamus, and ventral thalamus and the third ventricle.
diencéfalo
brainstem
cuello encefálico
vagus nerve; each of the tenth pair of cranial nerves, supplying the heart, lungs, upper digestive tract, and other organs of the chest and abdomen
