Endocrine System Flashcards
Thyroid
Tiroides
Pancreas
Páncreas, enzymes for digesting food, insulin (lowers blood sugar), glucagon (raises blood sugar)
Hormone
Hormona
Epinephrine
Epinefrina, hormone secreted by adrenal medulla to help body deal with stress
Adrenaline
Adrenalina, hormone secreted by adrenal medulla to help body deal with stress
Thyroid gland
Glandula tiroidea, largest endocrine gland, secretes T3 & T4 (AKA tiroxina)
Goiter
Bocio, enlargement of thyroid gland
Adrenal glands
Glandulas suprarrenales, two: one above each kidney
Islets of Langerhans
Islotes de Langerhans, clusters of endocrine tissue in pancreas, secrete hormones including insulin and glucagon
Pituitary gland
Hipófisis, AKA hypophysis cerebri; at base of brain–master gland; produces hormones that stimulate function of other endocrine glands–hormones: TSH, FSH, LH, HGH, ACTH, prolactic, oxytocin
Hypothalamus
In brain. Stim & inhib hormones
parathyroid gland
in neck. parathyroid hormone, regulates calcium levels in the blood and bone metabolism
pineal gland
in brain. melatonin, sleep-wake patterns
infundibulum; the hollow stalk that connects the hypothalamus and the posterior pituitary gland
infundíbulo
