Neurologic Vocab Flashcards
delirium
acute disorientation, inattentive, incoherent, impaired recent memory, agitated, hallucinating
dysphagia
difficulty swallowing
dysphonia
abnormal pitch, volume, hoarseness/whispered
dysarthria
distorted and unintelligible pronunciation
dysphasia
receptive/expressive/global language disturbance
aphasia
receptive/expressive/global loss of language
receptive aphasia
able to speak may not make sense (wernicke)
expressive aphasia
unable to speak (broca)
global aphasia
both combined
dyskinesia
slow voluntary movement
paresthesia
abnormal sensation usually felt worse in hands and feet
- burning, prickling, tingling, numbness, skin crawling/itching (caused by peripheral neuropathy)
paresis
weakness of muscles
paralysis
loss of motor function
hemiplegia
paralysis of one side of body
paraplegia
paralysis of lower body
quadriplegia
complete loss of muscle tone and paralysis of all extremities
flaccidity
hypotonia, muscle feels limp, soft, flabby
spasticity
hypertonia, resistance to passive extension
clasp-knife rigidity
resistance that may suddenly give way
lead-pipe rigidity
constant resistance to passive movement
cogwheel rigidity
resistance to release by degrees of passive extension
decorticate rigidity
lesion of cerebral cortex
- flexion of upper extremities, adduction of arm tightly against thorax
- extension, internal rotation and plantar flexion of lower extremities
decerebrate rigidity
lesion in rubrospinal tract
- extension of upper and lower extremities, plantar flexion
- teeth clenched; hyperextended neck/back
fasiculation
rapid continuous twitching of resting muscle
myoclonus
single sudden jerky movement
- regular jerky movement (hiccups)
- severe: grand-mal seizure
chorea
jerky, involuntary, purposeless, nonrepetitive movement
tic
involuntary, compulsive, repetitive twitching of muscle group
tremor
contraction of opposing muscle group, rhythmic movement of joints
resting tremor
when muscles are at rest and supported again gravity, “pill-rolling tremor” improves with voluntary movement
intention tremor
worse with voluntary movement
presyncope
lightheaded, feeling faint
vertigo
rotational spinning of person/room (inner ear disease, meniere disease)
disequilibrium
poor balance, shaking, instability (neuro/sensory)
euphoria
excessive well-being, inappropriate/unusual elation (pathological)
flat effect
lack of emotional response
elation
joy, increased motor activity (non pathological)
irritability
easily provoked, impatient
ambivalence
the existence of opposing emotions
labile
rapidly shifting/changing
depersonalization
loss of identity
ataxia
lack of coordination and balance
