NSAIDs

A
  • prostaglandin production inhibitor = COX inhibitor
  • MOA: prevent prostaglandin production by inhibiting COX1, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic
  • indication: mild pain (analgesic) –> sprains, strains, muscle pain, toothache, HA; fever; inflammation –> OA, RA, gouty arth, Lupus, dysmenorrhea

Contraindication: pregnancy (class D), PUD, RF, bleeding, concurrently with ETOH

  • black box warning (twice): sudden death, MI, unstable angina, ischemic CVA, TIA and peripheral thrombosis

  • contraindication: <19 years of age (Reye’s syndrome–swelling of liver and brain)

  • indication: inflammatory disorders
  • contraindication: fungal/viral infections, live attenuated virus vaccine (intranasal flu, small pox)
  • routes: PO, IM, topical, aerosol, intra-articular injection

  • contraindication: never during acute infection
