Epoetin alpha

A

increase RBC

MOA:
- erythropoietin growth factor

Indication:

  • low RBC secondary to CKD
  • replacement of blood cells after chemo and HIV drug
  • hasting of bone marrow function after a bone marrow transplant

SE:

  • HTN
  • increased H&H
  • low iron and B12

AE:
- seizure, thromboembolic event

Contraindication

  • pregnancy
  • uncontrolled HTN

filgrastim

A

specific to neutrophils and WBC

MOA:
- leukopoietic growth factor

Indication:

  • neutropenia from antineoplastic drugs, HIV, neonatal neutropenia (prevent infection)
  • increase WBC prior to harvesting (autologous transplant)

SE:

  • bone/joint/muscle pain
  • leukocytosis absolute neutrophil > 10,000

AE:
- splenomegaly/rupture

Contraindication:
- pregnancy (C)

Indication:
- chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia

AE:
- fluid retention and HF
- tachydysrhythmia 
- MI
- conjunctival injection
papilledema

Contraindication
- pregnancy
