Nervous Tissue I Flashcards
what does nervous tissue do?
COMMUNICATE
neurons coordinate and integrate cell signals
neurons supported by various glia
what does efferent mean?
to be carried AWAY from
what does afferent mean?
to be carried TOWARDS a center
what is sensory input?
AFFERENT
information brought from the periphery to the CNS
what is motor output?
EFFERENT
information leaving the CNS for the periphery
name some motor output examples
skeletal muscle - voluntary movement
chewing
name some sensory input examples
touch, pain, temperature, etc
what makes up the CNS?
brain
spinal cord
what makes up the PNS?
cranial nerves
spinal nerves
what are neurons and what is the most common type?
they are functional cells —> primary function is to generate and propagate action potentials
multipolar neurons (traditional neuron type)
what are glial cells?
they are support cells for the neuron
what is neuropil?
synaptically dense regions that are composed of unmyelinated axons, dendrites and processes of glial cells
is there connective tissue in the CNS?
NO NO NO
what are the green arrows pointing to?
neurons
what are the BLUE arrows pointing to?
glial cells
what do dendrites do?
deliver info TO the cell body
what makes up the cell body?
central circle part of the dendrite formation
has nucleus and nucleolus
what is the axon hillock?
is the broad to narrow base section right after the cell body
connects cell body to axon
what is the initial segment?
is the 1st part of the axon
where the action potential initiates
what is the internodal segment?
area where the axon is protected from the ECM as environment will mess with AP
what are the nodes of ranvier?
they are gaps that allow ions to diffuse in and out of the neuron, propagating the electrical signal down the axon
what are terminal arborizations?
terminal branches of the cell
what are boutons?
enlargements at the end
what are nissl bodies?
subcellular structures found in nerve cell bodies and dendrites
contain rough ER and ribosomes
what are neurofilaments?
intermediate filaments that provide structural support to the cell (cytoskeletal structures)
