life-threatening subcutaneous soft tissue infection

What are signs and symptoms of NF?
A
• Severe pain or anaesthesia over site • Systemic signs of infection: 1. Fever 2. Palpitations 3. Tachycardia 4. Tachyponoea

What is the lesion like in NF?
A
- Warm w oedema
- Erythematous (red)
- May turn violet

What is Type 1 NF?
A
Due to a combination of Bacteroides, Peptostreptococcus and Enterobacterales

What is Type 2 in NF?
A
Streptococcus pyogenes

What Ix are done in NF?
A
• Surgical exploration first
• Blood and tissue cultures after
(clinical diagnosis)

What is the management for NF?
A
-urgent don’t wait for results
• Surgical debridement!
• IV empirical antibiotics and supportive care
