Cataracts Flashcards
What is cataracts?
- Opacification of the lens
- Most common cause of treatable blindness in world
- Get gradual loss of visual acuity
What is the aeitology of cataracts?
normal proteins that make up the lens of the eye degrade overtime and become opaque
What RF can cause the acceleration of catacracts?
- Ageing >65
- Smoking
- Alcohol
- UV exposure
- Diabetes
- Trauma
- Uveitits
What are symptoms of cataracts?
- Gradual loss of vision (over many years)
- Painless
- Blurry vision
- Glare in bright light
What investigations and findings are there for cataracts?
- Slit lamp reveals the cataract as black against a red reflex
- Loss of visual acuity
- Normal pupillary response
- Reduced red reflex on fundoscopy
What is visual acuity a measure of?
of the ability of the eye to distinguish shapes and the details of objects at a given distance
What are different types of pupillary response - direct and consensual?
they constrict to direct illumination (direct response) and to illumination of the opposite eye (consensual response)
What is the management for catacracts?
- Control RF to slow down development of cataracts
2. Surgical management when symptoms begin to affect lifestyle
What surgery can be offered for cataracts?
Phaecoemulsification with an intraocular lens implant – under local aneasthetic
