What does BPPV stand for?
benign proximal positional vertigo
What is BPPV?
- Inner ear disorder characterised by recurrent brief attacks of positional vertigo
- Most common cause of vertigo
What does the benign part of BPPV mean?
no further illness, good prognosis
What does the paroxysmal part of BPPV mean?
temporary and sudden onset
What does the positional part of BPPV stand for?
related to body position change
What does the vertigo part of BPPV mean?
sensation of head spinning
What are 2 types of BPPV
- primary
- secondary
What happens in primary BPPV?
- Canalith particles break loose
- Fall into wrong part of semi-circular canal of your inner ear
- Vertigo
When does secondary BPPV happen?
- Migraines
- Anxiety disorder
- Head trauma
What are RF for BPPV?
- Increasing age
- Female
- Migraines
- Anxiety disorders
- Head trauma
What does the utricle contain?
contains calcium crystals (canaliths) which help detect movement
When is BPPV secondary?
if clear precipitating event beforehand
What are symptoms of BPPV?
- Lasts <1 min
- Quick onset
- Provokes by certain position (looking upwards)
- N+V
What is Hallpike’s maenoeuvre?
- Patient sitting up
- Rotate head 45 degrees to one side
- Lie patient down and hold their head at 20 degree extension at edge of bed
