What is a fibroadenoma?
benign breast disease
What is epid of fibroadenoma?
Usually occurs <30 but can occur up to menopause
What is the patho of fibroadenoma?
benign overgrowth of collaegenous mesenchye of one breast lobule
What are symptoms of fibroadenoma?
- Firm
- smooth
- mobile lump – ‘breast mouse’
- PAINLESS
What is the prognosis of fibroadenoma?
- May be multiple
2. 1/3 regress, 1/3 stay the same and 1/3 get bigger
What is Mx of fibroadenoma?
- Observation and reassurance
- If in doubt USS (conclusive) + FNA
- Surgical excision if large
What tissue is involved?
glandular and stromal tissue
What are Ix for fibroadenoma?
- USS : + Re scan in 3-6 months to monitor growth
* Biopsy : >25 yo / very large
What is the management if the fibroadenoma is <4cm?
Conservative (should shrink over 2 yr – monitor for rapid enlargement)
What is the management if the fibroadenoma is >4cm?
Surgical excision
What is the management if the fibroadeoma is rapidly enalrging?
Surgical Excision
What are DDx for a breast lunmp?
- Fibroadenoma
- Fibrocystic disease
- Cyst
- Breast cancer
What is fibrocystic disease?
- Fibrous tissue
* Fluid collection (cysts)
What would the fibrous parts of the breasts feel like?
hard / firm / rubbery
What are the cysts like?
- can enlarge & and stretch surrounding breast tissue a
