Pharmacology
A
Naloxone competes for the same receptor sites as opioid drugs. It antagonises opiod effects to prevent or reverse respiratory depression, sedation and hypotension.

- Narcotic reversal can cause combativeness, vomiting, sweating, tachycardia & hypertension
- Acute withdrawal convulsions in chronic user
- Pulmonary oedema

- Adequate oxygenation/ventilation prior to admin
- Renarcotisation possible
- May unmask potential unwanted side effects in poly-pharm OD
- DO NOT admin to newborn as it may lead to acute withdrawal and seizures

IM 1.6mg, single dose only

IM 20mcg/kg, single dose only, not to exceed 800mcg
