Pharmacology

A

Naloxone competes for the same receptor sites as opioid drugs. It antagonises opiod effects to prevent or reverse respiratory depression, sedation and hypotension.

  • Narcotic reversal can cause combativeness, vomiting, sweating, tachycardia & hypertension
  • Acute withdrawal convulsions in chronic user

  • Adequate oxygenation/ventilation prior to admin
  • Renarcotisation possible
  • May unmask potential unwanted side effects in poly-pharm OD
  • DO NOT admin to newborn as it may lead to acute withdrawal and seizures
