Musculoskeletal System Flashcards
skeletal muscle or striated
attaches primarily to bone and is responsible for locomotion, movement, and support of the skeleton
called striated because alernating light and dark bands are visible when examined under a microscope
voluntary
smooth muscle
found within the walls of internal organs of the digestive system, urinary system, and blood vessels
involuntary
cardiac muscle
only found in the heart
involuntary
extensibility
ability of muscle tissue to be stretched without being damaged
contractility
ability for muscle to contract
elasticity
muscles ability to be streteched, compressed, or distortedand then return to its normal state
excitability
the ability to respond to certain stimuli by producuing electrical signals
muscular system
refers to the skeletal muscular system which does not includ the smooth and cardaic muscle tissue
origin
the point of muscle attachment on the stationary bone
insertion
the point of muscle attachment on the mobile bone
belly
the fleshy middle portion of the muscle between the orgin and insertion
responsible for doing most of the work during contraction of the muscle
antagonistic muscle groups
skeletal muscles that work in groups
they are arranged in opposing pairs
ine pair contracts (prime mover or agonist) while the other pair relaxes (antagonist)
synergists
muscle groups that aid movement of prime mover muscles and prevent unwanted movement across intermediate joints
fixators
muscle groups that stablize the orgin of the prime mover
compartment
group of muscles associated with blood vessels and associated nerves
