Female Reproductive System Flashcards
female reproductive system
composed of the ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus, vagina, external organs (vulva and mammary glands)
location
lies witihin shallow deepressions, superior to the pelvic region and lateral to the fundus of the uterus
ovaries
produce ovum, secrete horomones
oogenesis
formation and developement of ovum
one ovum matures each month and is available for fertilization by the sperm
ovum (ova)
mature female reproductive cell
estrogen
responsible for development and maintenance of female accessory sex organs
responsible for secondary female sex characteristics
progesterone
responsible for preparing the endometrial lining for implantation of the fertilized ovum
uterine (fallopian) tubes
two tube like structures that connect to the fundus of the uterus and extend laterally toward the ovaries
transports fertilized or unfertilized ova to the uterus
distal 1/3 of the uterne tubes are usually the site of fertilization
fertilization
can occur at any time within 12 to 24 hours of ovulation
ovulation
the discharge of a mature unimpregnated ovum from te ovary
fimbriae
fingerlike projections located at the most lateral portion of both uterine tubes
after ovulation, by movement, the fmbriae create currents that sweep the ovum into the uterine tube
uterus
pear shaped, hollow, muscular organ
serves as part of the pathway from sperm to reach the uterine tubes
site of menistration, implantation of the fertilized ovum, and storage are for the developing fetus until delivery
perimetrium
the outer layer that surrounds the uterus and covers the myometrium
myometrium
the inner layer of muscle that contracts during deliver to expel the fetus from the uterus
endometrium
the innermost layer of tissue that serves as the site of implantation of the fretilized ovim and is also the layer that sheds during menstrual flow
