How many days of RICE should be applied after an injury?
1-3 days
What are the benefits of heat therapy?
- Increased blood flow
- Reduces muscle spasm
- Helps reduce stiffness
When should you not use heat therapy?
On inflamed areas
Do clinical guidelines recommended using hot then cold (and repeat)?

How to TENS unit work?
- Alters pain transmission

Who shouldn’t use TENS units?
People w/ pacemakers, defibrillators, ECG, respirators, pregnant or pediatric patients.
What is an approach for low-back treatment?
OMM; Heat wrap, massage, acupuncture, spinal manipulation
What is a rubefacient?
A substance for topical application that produces redness of the skin by causing dilation
What is a counter irritant?
External Anagesics; Nerve stimulation rather than nerve depression
Creates mild inflammatory response that detracts the deeper pain
What is a paradoxical response?
Relief comes from producing a less severe pain to mask a more intense pain
