Muscles of the Leg Flashcards
How many compartments are in the leg? What are they separated by?
deep fascia of the leg forms three intermusclular sepate that divide the leg in to three main compartments
What are the compartments of the leg?
anterior, lateral, posterior
What does the anterior compartment of the leg house and what are its functions?
houses four muscles involved with dorsiflexion of the foot, extension of the toes and inversion/eversion of the foot
What nerve innervates the anterior compartment of the leg?
deep fibular nerve
What does the lateral compartment of the leg house and what are its functions?
houses two muscles involved with plantar flexion and eversion of the foot
What nerve innervates the lateral compartment of the leg?
superficial fibular nerve
What is the posterior compartment of the leg divided into?
superficial and deep
What are the superficial posterior compartment’s functions?
plantar flexions of the foot
What are the deep posterior compartments’ functions?
flexors of toes, inversion of the foot
What muscles of the posterior compartment of the leg acts on the knee joint?
popliteus
What nerve innervates the posterior compartment of the leg?
tibial nerve
What is the origin of the tibialis anterior?
the proximal lateral surface of the tibia
What is the insertion of the tibialis anterior?
the plantar aspect of the 1st metatarsal and the medial cuneiform
What are the functions of the tibialis anterior?
dorsiflexion of the foot @ the ankle joint and inversion of the foot @ subtalar joint
What is the main function of the tibialis anterior?
inversion of the foot @ subtalar joint
What nerve innervates the tibialis anterior?
deep fibular nerve
What is the origin of the extensor hallucis longus?
middle portion of the fibula on the anterior surface
What is the insertion of the extensor hallucis longus?
dorsal surface of the distal phalanx of the big toe
What are the functions of the extensor hallucis longus?
extension of the hallux @ MTP + IP, dorsiflexion of foot @ ankle joint, inversion of food @ subtalar
What nerve innervates the extensor hallucis longus?
deep fibular nerve
What is the origin of the extensor digitorum longus?
most of the anterior surface of the fibula, lateral condyle of the tibia
What is the insertion of the extensor digitorum longus?
middle and distal phalanges of digits #2-5
What are the functions of the extensor digitorum longus?
eversion of foot @ subtalar joint, extension of digits #2-5 @ MTP + IP, dorsiflexion of foot @ ankle joint
What nerve innervates the extensor digitiorm longus
deep fibular
What are the fibularis muscles also known as?
peroneus
What is the origin of the fibularis tertius?
distal 1/3 of the anterior surface of the fibular and interosseous
What is the insertion of the fibularis Tertius
base of 5th metatarsal
What are the functions of the fibularis tertius?
dorsiflexion of foot @ ankle joint, eversion of foot @ subtalar
