Intrinsic Mucscles of the Hand Flashcards
What are the three parts of the hand?
- the wrist (carpus) 2. hand proper (metacarpus) 3. fingers (digits)
The anterior surface of the hand is called what?
the palm
What posterior surface of the hand is called what?
dorsum
What is the axis of the hand?
the third metacarpal (middle finger)
ADDuction and ABduction of fingers is in relation to what?
the axis (middle finger) of the hand
What are the movements of the axis of the hand?
ABduction to the right and left (no adduction because it is the axis)
What is different about the first digit (thumb) compared to digits 2-5?
2 phalanges, has 90 degree medial rotation
What digit is at a right angle to the other digits?
first
What are the movements of the thumb? At what joint?
AB/ADD, flex/ext/opposition, reposition @ carpometacarpal joints
What is the carpal arch?
formed by carpal bones, directed anteriorly
How is the carpal tunnel formed?
carpal arch being converted to carpal tunnel by the attachment of the flexor retinaculum
What passes through the carpal tunnel?
9 tendons and median nerve
What are the 9 tendons that pass through the carpal tunnel?
x4 from flexor digitortorum superficialis
x4 from flexor digitorum profundus
x1 from flexor pollicis longus
What is an extrinsic muscle?
origin and insertion are not in the same region
What is an intrinsic muscle?
origin and insertion are in the same region
What are the groups of intrinsic muscles of the hand?
Thenar Eminence, Hypothenar Eminence, Central
What is the thenar eminence?
intrinsic muscles of the hand that move the thumb.
What muscles are part of the thenar eminence?
abductor pollicis brevis, flexor pollicis brevis, opponens pollicis
What is the deepest muscle of the thenar eminence
opponens pollicis
What is the hypothenar eminence
intrinsic muscles of the hand that move the 5th digit
What muscles are included in the hypothenar eminance?
palmaris brevis, abductor digiti minimi, flexor digiti minimi, opponens digiti minimi
What muscles are included in the central group of the hand?
lumbricals (4), dorsal interosseous (4), palmar interosseous (3), adductor pollicis
Which of the follow muscles does NOT belong to the thenar eminence? What group does it actually belong to?:
Abductor pollicis brevis, adductor pollicis, flexor pollicis brevis, opponens pollicis
Adductor Pollicis belongs to central group
All intrinsic muscles of the hand are innervated by which nerve(s)?
medial and/or ulnar
Lumbrical muscles are innervated by which nerve(s)
median and/or ulnar
The thenar eminence is innervated by which nerve(s)
median nerve
