Muscles functions Flashcards
Pectoralis Major
Adducts and meidially roates the upper limb
Pectoralis Minor
Stabilises the scapula by drawing it anteroinferiorlu against the thoracic wall
Serratus anterior
Rotates the scapula
Subclavius
anchors and depresses the clavicle
Trapezius
Upper fibres elevate the scapula and rotate during abduction of the arm
Middle fibres - retract the scapula
Lower scapula - pulls the scapula inferiorly
Lattisimus dorsi
Extends, adducts and medially rotates the upper limb
levatator scapulae
elevates the scapula
Rhomboids
Reatracts and rotates the scapula
Deltoid
Anterior fibres- flexion and medial rotation
Posterior fibres- extension and lateral rotation
Middle fibres- the maor abductor of the arm
Teres major
Adducts the shoulder and medially rotates the arm
Supraspinatus
Abducts the arm 0-15 and assists deltoid for 15-90 degrees
Infraspinatus
Laterally rotates the arm
Subscapularis
Medially rotates the arm
Teres minor
Laterally rotates the arm
Biceps Brachii
Supination of the forearm
Flexes the arm at the elbow and the shoulder
Coracobrachialis
Flexion of the arm at the shoulder, and weak adduction
Brachialis
Flexion at the elbow
Triceps brachii
extension of the arm at the elbow
FCU
Flexion and adduction at the wrist
Palmaris Longus
Flexion at the wrist
Flexor carpi radialis
Flexion and abduction at the wrist
Pronator teres
Pronation of the forearm
Flexor digitrorum superficialis
Flexes the metacarpophalangeal joints and proximal interphalangeal joints at the 4 fingers, and flexes the wrist
Flexor Digitorum Profundus
Only muscle that can flex the distal interphalangeal joints of the fingers.
Flexes at metacarpophalangeal joints and at the wrist
Flexor Pollicis longus
Flexes interphalangeal joint and metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb
Pronator Quadratus
Pronates the forearm
Brachioradialis
Flexes at the elbow
Extensor Carpi radialis Brevis
Extends and abducts the wrist
Extensor Carpi radialis longus
extends and abducts the wrist
Extensor Digitorum
Extends medial four fingers at the MCP and IP joints
Extensor digiti minimi
Extends the little finger, and contributes to extension of the wrist
Extensor Carpi ulnaris
Extension and adduction of the wrist
Aconeus
Extends and stabilises the elbow joint.
Abducts the ulna during pronation of the forearm
Supinator
supinates the forearm
Abductor pollicis longus
Abducts the thumb
Extensor Pollicis brevis
Extends at the metacarpophalangeal and carpometacarpal
extensor pollicis longus
extends all joints of the thumb
Extensor Indicis propius
Extends the index finger
opponens pollicis
opposes the thumb, by medially rotating and flexing the metacarpal on the trapezium
Abductor Pollicis brevis
Abducts the thumb
Flexor pollicis brevis
Flexes the MCP joint of the thumb
opponnes digiti minimi
Rotates the metacarpal of the little finger towards the palm producing opposition
abductor digiti minimi
abducts the little finger
Flexor digiti minimi brevis
Flexes the MCP joint of the little finger
Lumbricals
Flex at the MCP joint, and extend at the interphalangeal joints of each finger
Dorsal interossei
Abduct the fingers at the MCP joint
Palmar interossei
Adducts the finger at the MCP joint
palmaris brevis
Wrinkles the skin of the hypothenar eminence and deepens the curvature of the hand, improving grip
Adductor pollicis
Adductor of the thumb
