Cell 2 Flashcards
What is the endomembrane system?
A collection of membrane limited sacs, tubules and vesicles responsible for compartmentalising and channelling molecules through the cell
What does the endomembrane sysytem consist of?
Endoplasmic reticulum, golgi apparatus , vesicles, lysosomes
What is the RER responsible for the production of?
secretory Proteins and membrane
What is the SER responsible for?
Lipids
Where is SER commonly found?
glands eg. Sebaceous glands
What are the enzymes of the SER used for?
Can help eliminate toxins, drugs, alcohol- prominent in hepatocytes
What are ribosomes?
Small organelles that synthesise proteins
What does each ribsome consist of?
Ribsomal RNA and protein
What are the two types of ribosomes and where are they found?
Free ribosomes- scattered throughout the cytoplasm
Fixed ribosomes- fixed to RER
What is a primary lysosome?
Those which have yet to begin in a digestive event and fuse with a pathogen
What is a secondary lysosome?
Digestion proceeds in the secondary lysosome
What is the undigested material in the secondary lysosome known as?
residual body
What are the functions of the golgi apparatus?
Modifying products of the ER- glycosylation
Storage
Sorting and packaging of molecules into vesicles for transport
Shipping for secretory vesicles
What are the two sides of the golgi apparatus known as?
Cis and trans
What is the role of lysosomes in autophagy?
Destroy and recycle organelles and macromolecules from within the cell
