Muscles acting on the Scapula Flashcards
How is the scapula attached to the body?
The scapula is attached to the body only by musculature, except at the acromioclavicular joint
What does the levator scapulae do?
Elevates the scapula
Where is the levator scapulae?
Transverse processes C1-C4 to superior angle of scapula, not skull
How does the levator scapulae rotate the scapula?
Rotates scapula downwards, glenoid fossa down
What happens when the levator scapulae is fixed?
Neck will flex laterally
What does the rhomboideus minor do?
Retract scapula, rotate scapula downward
How is the rhomboideus a fixator?
It stabilizes the scapula
Which rhomboideus is superior?
The rhomboideus minor
What does the rhomboideus major do?
Stabilizes scapula (fixator)
What does the serratus anterior do?
Protract scapula
How does the serratus anterior rotate the scapula?
Rotates scapula upwards, glenoid fossa up
Where is the pectoralis minor?
Coracoid process of scapula to ribs 3,4,5
With flexed ribs, what does the pectoralis minor do?
With ribs flexed, depresses and protracts scapula (down and forward)
With a fixed scapula, what does the pectoralis minor do?
With the scapula fixed, helps a little with inspiration
