Q

What types of incidents commonly cause an upper brachial plexus injury?

A

Most upper brachial plexus injuries result from excessive lateral bending of the head. The incidents that often cause this are obstetrical trauma (the doctor pulling too forcefully on the infants head) and a motorcycle accident beause the rider often has a lot of force applied to the neck/shoulder juncture.

Q

What areas of the brachial plexus and which spinal nerves are typically affected by an upper brachial plexus injury?

A

An upper brachial plexus injury typically involves damage to the roots and trunks of the superior and sometimes middle branches. The C5, C6, and, to a lesser extent, C7 nerves are typically damaged.

Q

What types of incidents commonly cause an upper brachial plexus injury?

A

Most lower brachial plexus injuries result from forceful abduction of the arm. The incidents that most commonly cause this are obstetrical trauma (the doctor pulling on the baby’s arm too hard) and by hanging by one arm from something.

Q

What areas of the brachial plexus and which spinal nerves are typically affected by a lower brachial plexus injury?

A

Q

What is an ulnar deviation?

A

Ulnar deviation, also known as ulnar drift, is a hand deformity in which the swelling of the metacarpophalangeal joints (the big knuckles at the base of the fingers) causes the fingers to become displaced, tending towards the little finger.
