Ms13 Flashcards
What is science?
A body of knowledge about the natural world that is established through evidence-based observations and experimentation
What does scientific thinking and discovery rely on?
6 Things: Critical thinking Diverse perspectives Objectivity(remove personal bias) Empirical evidence over speculation Reporting the whole truth Logic
What must you always offer to support your statements?
Evidence
What kind of connections?
Meaningful connections (based on knowledge and experience)
What is the scientific method used for?
To generate new knowledge
What is the Scientific Method?
A step-wise process used to generate scientific knowledge.
What are the steps of the Scientific Method?
Five steps: Ask a question Construct a hypothesis Make a prediction Conduct an experiment Analyze your data
What must a hypothesis be?
Three things:
Well informed
Potentially falsifiable
Testable
What is the closest to fact there is?
Scientific theory
Theories lead to laws (Newton’s Three Laws of Motion)
What is a Theory?
A major component of scientific knowledge that is repeatedly confirmed through diverse and rigorous testing
What is Scientific Fact
It is Direct and Repeatable observations about the natural world
What is Observational Study?
Data through observation (no manipulation of variables; natural)
What is an Experiment?
Need Three Things:
Variables manipulated
Control group
experimental/control group(manipulated)
What is Data/Datum?
Reported information
What is a Correlation?
One or more variables behaving in an interrelated way; this is NOT Causation
