Q

What causes global warming?

A

Part is natural; the Earth’s oblong shape results in warming and cooling cycles. This is made worse by humans burning fossil fuels that emit a greenhouse gas , CO2; A larger population a larger fossil fuel use

Q

What does global warming lead to?

A
  1. Sea level rise(melting ice, H20 expands) 2. higher primary productivity(more CO2) 3. Higher temperature (ocean warming) 4. Ocean acidification 5. increased frequency and severity of storms 6. extinction of species

Q

What does ocean warming lead to?

A
  1. Sea level rise 2. extinction and endangerment of temperature sensitive marine organisms 3. Sea ice and land ice melt causing sea level rise and a decrease in salinity

Q

Give an example of a negative affect of ocean acidification?

A

Coral reefs. The symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) can not tolerate ocean acidification so they leave the coral. Without the algae to help make food the coral die(called coral bleaching)

Q

What happens when water and carbon dioxide mix?(H2O+CO2)

A

Makes hydrogen ions (H+; increases acidity), and Bicarbonate ions(HCO-3)

16
Q

Higher than 7pH is?

A

is alkaline or bases (higher OH- concentration)

17
Q

What is Seawater’s pH?

A

It is about 8; slightly alkaline

18
Q

When you decrease .1 pH you increase?

A

the concentration of H+ ion by 30%

19
Q

What are results of Ocean Acidification?

A

Coral bleaching; shells dissolve because H+ Ions prevent them from using CaCO3

20
Q

What is CaCO3?

A

Calcium Carbonate

21
Q

if you go from Ph 8.075 to pH 7.975 what happens?

A

30 % increase in H+ Ions, 30% decrease in OH- Ions
