MORPHINE mechanism of action

A

MECHANISM OF ACTION

  • Alleviates pain through CNS action
  • Suppresses fear and anxiety centers in the brain
  • Depresses brain respiratory centers
  • Increases peripheral venous capacitance and decreases venous return
  • Decreases preload and after load, which decrease myocardial oxygen demand.

  • Exacerbated COPD
  • Depressed respiratory drive
  • Hypotension
  • Undiagnosed abdominal pain

MORPHINE dose and administration

A

DOSE AND ADMINISTRATION
* ADULT:
STEMI 2 - 4 mg SIVP repeat dose 2 - 8 mg at 15 minute intervals.
PAIN CONTROL ( medical direction)
* PEDI:
0.1 - 0.2 mg / kg IV/IO/IM/SC with MAX dose of 5 mg
