INDICATIONS
- Severe bradycardia
- Organophosphate poisoning
- Nerve agent exposure
- RSI in pediatrics
- Beta blocker and calcium channel overdose
ATROPINE SULFATE mechanism of action
MECHANISM OF ACTION
- Inhibits the action of acetylcholine at post-ganglionic parasympathetic neuro-effector sites
- Increases heart rate in symptomatic bradydysrhytmias
ATROPINE SULFATE contraindications
CONTRAINDICATIONS
- Tachycardia
- Hypothermic bradycardia
- Unstable cardiovascular status with bleeding and myocardial ischemia
- Narrow angle glaucoma
ATROPINE SULFATE adverse effects
ADVERSE EFFECTS
- Drowsiness
- Confusion
- Headache
- Tachycardia
- Palpitations
- N / V
- Pupil dilation
- Dry mouth
- Blurred vision
- Flushed dry hot skin
- Paradoxical bradycardia when given at low doses
ATROPINE SULFATE precautions
PRECAUTIONS
* Effects are enhanced by antihistamines, procainamide, quinidine, antipsychotics, benzodiazepines and antidepressants
ATROPINE SULFATE dose and administration
DOSE AND ADMINISTRATION
* ADULT
Bradycardia 0.5 mg IV every 3-5 minute as needed not to exceed total dose of 0.04 mg/kg (maximum of 3 mg total)
* PEDI
Bradycardia 0.02 mg/kg IV/IO ( minimum dose of 0.1)
