Carbohydrate, Anti-hypoglycemic
DOSE & ADMINISTRATION OF DEXTROSE
D & A
ADULT: 12.5 -25 grams of a 50 % solution SIVP. May be repeated as necessary.
PEDI 1 YEAR OR OLDER: 0.5 - 1 gram/kg of a 25 % solution SIVP. May be repeated as necessary.
NEONATES & INFANTS: See chart
INDICATIONS OF DEXTROSE
INDICATIONS
Hypoglycemia, Altered LOC, Coma of unknown origin, Seizure of unknown origin, status epilepticus.
MECHANISM OF ACTION OF DEXTROSE
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Rapidly increases serum glucose level. Short term osmotic diuresis.
CONTRAINDICATIONS OF DEXTROSE
CONTRAINDICATIONS Intracranial Hemorrhage (Traumatic or Stroke) Hyperglycemia.
ADVERSE EFFECTS OF DEXTROSE
ADVERSE EFFECTS
Extravasation leads to tissue necrosis, pain and burning from IV infusion, hyperglycemia.

PRECAUTIONS
Hypertonic solution will cause tissue necrosis if infiltration of the IV occurs
