INDICATIONS OF ACTIVATED CHARCOAL
INDICATIONS
Oral poisonings and medication overdoses. Usually within 1 hour of ingestion, best use after poisons have been evacuated from the stomach.
MECHANISM OF ACTION OF ACTIVATED CHARCOAL
MECHANISM OF ACTIONS
Binds (adsorbs) toxic substance and prevents them from being absorbed by the GI tract.
CONTRAINDICATIONS OF ACTIVATED CHARCOAL
CONTRAINDICATIONS Altered LOC ( aspiration risks), Ingestion of corrosives, caustics or petroleum products. Abdominal pain (caution)
ADVERSE EFFECTS OF ACTIVATED CHARCOAL
ADVERSE EFFECTS
Aspiration can cause fatal pneumonitis, can also cause black stools, diarrhea, vomiting and bowel obstruction.

Caution with simultaneous administration with other drugs, caution in suspected bowel obstruction
