Module 9.2 Flashcards
Dehydration
Can be found in any animal
Death due to dehydration may precede death to starvation
Deceased animals hard to determine
Live animals: skin turgor, MM, eye position, PCV/total protein, USG
Malnutrition
Does not distinguish between too many/too little nutrients
Under or overweight
Metabolic bone dz in reptiles
Quality and quantity matter (age, repro, health, inaccessibility, insufficient quantities, etc.)
Emaciation
Abnormally underweight and loss of fat/skeletal muscle
-cachexia: endogenous factors (anorexia, ^ protein catabolism, cytokine driven, refractory to nutritional support)
-starvation: exogenous factors (involuntary reduction in calories, sparing of lean body mass until fat stores deplete, correctable with nutritional support)
Emaciation does not equal starvation
Cachexia vs starvation
Cachexia: internal factors, anorexia, mass then fat, refractory, empty stomach on necropsy, dz maybe found
Starvation: external factors, involuntary reduced calories, fat then mass, correctable, foreign material or food in stomach on necropsy, likely abandoned
Starvation
Body fat loss: subq, internal, organ, bone marrow
After fat, muscle
Cats: reddish coat color
How long?
Can depend on many factors
