Module 12.3 Flashcards
Types of thermal injuries
Dry heat (flame, hot surface, contact/near contact)
Wet heat (liquids)
Microwave radiation
Electrothermal
High ambient temp (hyperthermia)
Low ambient temp (hypothermia)
Burns
Asymmetrical, localized
-abnormal patterns
Do not progress after 5 days unless repetitive injury
Burn degrees 3-6 degree systems
1st-epidermis, vascular reaction (edema and erythema), painful
2nd-partial/full thickness epidermis and partial dermis, painful, coagulative necrosis
3rd-full thickness, dk brown/leathery eschar w red rim, not painful on site bc no nerves left
4th-epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous tx, muscle and/or bone, blackened and charred, non painful
Rule of nines
Add up regions of body to get percentage
>20% body surface-metabolic derangement begin
>50% body surface-incompatible w life
