Neglect
Most common type of animal abuse
Involves 1-many animals
May be seen with neglect of oneself or others
Act of omission (failure to provide)-harder to prove, may need to show intent
Not unusual to find some animals in good condition/others in bad condition
Five freedoms or five domains provide objectivity
Signs of neglect: animals
Grooming issues: matting, overgrowth, ingrown nails/overgrown nails/hooves, overgrown beaks, feather-picking
Embedded collars/halters
Emaciation/dehydration
Hypo or hyperthermia
Stereotypies (abnormal behavior)
Nasal/ocular signs (discharge)
Untreated injuries
Infectious dz
Lack of exercise
Signs of neglect: environment
Lack of preventative care (vx/deworming/preventatives)
Lack of potable water, edible food
Extreme cold/heat
Unsanitary environment
Overcrowding
Improper housing
Poor ventilation
Emaciation, dehydration, parasites, overgrown, dental issues, skin infections, potential for injury (broken fencing, etc.)
