Projectile injuries
Caused by: air-powered weapons, guns, arrows, slingshot
Situations: social violence, accidental, hunting, euth
Definitions
Gauge-inside of shotgun barrel, weight of solid spheres of lead that fit the bore of the firearm and total 1lb
Caliber-diameter of bullet; imperial (0.45 in-45 caliber), metric (9mm)
Perforating-passes completely through body
Penetrating-enters, does not exit
Air powered weapons and ammo
Compressed air-pumping/cocking weapon, gas powered CO2
Simple to complex
Air-rifle pellets: prometheus (steel) or sabo (lead/plastic)
BB: spherical
Handgun
Revolver or pistol
Single/double action
Single-one trigger pull=1 fired round, then cock hammer to fire next round
Double-one trigger pull=cocking and releasing
Rifle
Spiral grooves inside barrel cause bullet to rotate
Various calibers, often 0.22, .243, .270
Rimfire-primer in rim of cartridge
Centerfire-primer in center of cartridge
Shotgun and ammo
Single or double barreled
Smooth bored, variable
Most common is 12g
Cartridge, explosive charge (powder), wadding and pellets
-maybe more than 200, can be one single slug

-primer and propellant (charge)
-crimped at forward end around bullet
Bullet-lead, maybe covered by copper
Hollow-point: expanding used for controlled penetration
Metal jacket: prevents deformation of projectile
