male reproductive system
consists of the testes, various ducts, the urethra, and the following accessory glands: bulbourethral, prostate, and the seminal vesicles
scrotum
the pouchlike structure located behind and below the penis; it acts as a natural climate control center for the testicles in order to maintain viability of sperm; the temperature in the scrotum is a degree or two lower than the usual body temperature of 98.6*F, which would kill sperm
penis
the external male sex organ and is composed of erectile tissue covered with skin; acts as a male organ of copulation and urination; site of the orifice for the elimination of urine and semen from the body
testes
two ovoid-shaped organs, located within he scrotum; they provide the male sex hormone, testosterone, provided by cells within them; contain seminiferous tubules that are the site of sperm formation and development
epididymis
tubes connected to the testes along which sperm passes to the vas deferens; acts as a site for the maturation of sperm
vas deferens
also called the ductus deferens, it is a slim muscular tube, about 30-45cm in length, and is a continuation of the epididymis; it acts as a excretory duct of the testis
seminal vesicles
there are two of these vesicles connected by a narrow duct to a vas deferens; it produces a slightly alkaline fluid that becomes a part of the seminal fluid or semen
prostate gland
it is composed of glandular, connective, and muscular tissue and lies behind the urinary bladder; secretes an alkaline fluid that aids in maintaining the viability of spermatozoa
Bulbourethral glands (Cowper’s glands)
two small pea-sized glands located below the prostate and on either side of he urethra; produce a mucous secretion before ejaculation, which becomes a part of the semen
urethra
the duct about 20cm long that is divided into three sections: prostatic, membranous, and penile; transmits urine and semen out of the body
anorchism
condition in which there is a lack of one or both testes
artificial insemination
process of artificially placing semen into the vagina so that conception can take place
aspermia
condition involving lack of sperm or failure to ejaculate sperm
azoospermia
condition in which the semen lacks spermatozoa
balanitis
inflammation of the glans penis
castrate
removal of the testicles in a man or ovaries in a woman
circumcision
surgical procedure of removing the foreskin of the penis
cloning
process of creating a genetic identical of an individual organism through asexual reproduction
coitus
sexual intercourse between a man and a woman; copulation
condyloma
wart-like growth on the skin, most often seen on the external genitalia; either viral or syphilitic in origin
cryptochidism
condition in which one or both testes fail to descend into the scrotum
ejaculation
process of expulsion of seminal fluid and sperm from the male urethra
epispadias
congenital defect in which the urethra opens on the dorsum of the penis
erectile dysfunction (ED)
inability to achieve and maintain penile erection sufficient to complete satisfactory intercourse
gamete
mature reproductive cell of the male or female
gonorrhea (GC)
highly contagious venereal disease of the genital mucous membrane of either sex
gynecomastia
pathological condition of excessive development of the mammary glands in the male
herpes genitalis
highly contagious venereal disease of the genitalia of either sex; caused by herpes simplex virus – 2 (HSV-2)
heterosexual
pertaining to the opposite sex; refers to an individual who has a sexual preference and relationship with the opposite sex
homosexual
pertaining to the same sex; refers to an individual who has a sexual preference and relationship with the same sex
infertility
inability of a heterosexual couple to produce a viable offspring
mitosis
ordinary condition of cell division
oligospermia
condition in which there is insufficient (scanty) amount of spermatozoa in the semen
orchidectomy
surgical excision of a testicle
orchiditis
inflammation of a testicle
parenchyma
essential cells of a gland or organ that are concerned with its function
phimosis
a condition that can be present at birth in which there is narrowing of the opening of the prepuce and the foreskin cannot be drawn back over the glans penis
prepuce
foreskin over the glans penis in the male
puberty
stage of development in the male and female when secondary sex characteristics begin to develop and the individual becomes functionally capable of reproduction
semen
fluid-transporting medium for spermatozoa discharged during ejaculation
spermotoblast
sperm germ cell
spermatogenesis
formation of spermatozoa
spermatozoon
spermat/o zoon
seed,sperm = life
male sex cell; plural form is spermatozoa
spermicide
agent that kills sperm
syphilis
infectious venereal disease caused by Treponema pallidum, which is transmitted sexually
varicocele
enlargement and twisting of the veins of the spermatic cord
vasectomy
surgical procedure in which the vas deferens are tied off and cut apart, providing sterility by preventing transport of sperm out of the testes
vesiculitis
inflammation of a seminal vesicle
AIH
artificial insemination homologous
AOP
acknowledgement of paternity
DHT
dihydrotesterone
ED
erectile dysfunction
FDA
food and drug administration
GC
gonorrhea
