Communication and Language Development
Language
is a shared system of arbitrary symbols that are rule-governed and generative to produce an infinity of ideas
Nonverbal manual gestures
a form of non-verbal communication in which visible bodily actions communicate particular messages, either in place of speech or together and in parallel with spoken words
Formal language
a language that usually consist of a set of symbols and rules regarding their linkage
Cooing
vowel-like sounds produced by young infants when they are seemingly happy and contented
Babbling
prespeech sounds, such as dadada, made by infants from around 6 months of age. Babbling is usually regarded as practice in vocalization, which facilitates later speech development
One-word stage
the developmental period, between approximately 10 and 18 months, when children use one word at a time when speaking
Telegraphic speech
the speech of children roughly between the ages of 18 and 30 months. This is usually in the form of two-word expressions up to the age of about 24 months
