Module 1.4a: Studying the brain Flashcards
The process by which neurons are produced by neural stem cells
Neurogenesis
The brain’s ability to change, especially during childhood, by reorginizing after damage or by building new pathways based on experience
Neuroplasticity
Scientists destroy tiny clusters of normal or defective brain cells, observing effect on brain function
Lesion
Electrodes placed on the Scalp measure electrical activity in neurons
EEG (Electroencephalograph)
A head coil records magnetic fields from the brains natural electric currents
MEG
X-rays of the head generate images that may locate brain damage
CT Scan (Computed tomography)
Tracks where in the brain a temporarily radioactive form of glucose goes while the person given it performs a task
PET (Position emission technology)
Uses magnetic fields and radio waves to provide a map of a persons brain structure
MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging)
Measures blood flow to brain regions by comparing continuous MRI scans
fMRI (Functional Magnetic resonance imaging)
