Module 10: Tumor Immunology (SA) Flashcards
Neoplasm
an abnormal mass of tissue whose growth is rapid and uncoordinated
May be benign or malignant
Cancer
a cellular malignant tumor, the natural course of which is fatal
Tumor
a swelling or a defined mass of tissue
Benign or malignant
Benign
localized growth which is not malignant or recurrent
malignant
growth which tends to become progressively worse due to disruption of normal cell function, invasion of healthy tissue and metastasis
Metastasis
spreading from the primary location to other areas
invasive
move to tissues surrounding the primary site
Opposite to “in situ”
Protooncogene
gene in a host cell which is involved in regulation of cell growth
Oncogene
gene that encodes a protein capable of inducing cellular transformation (cancer) often through inappropriate cell growth leading to neoplastic transformation
“cancer causing gene”
