Misc Liver Dz of Dogs and Cats Flashcards
What is cholangiohepatitis secondary to?
Biliary obstruction, ascending infection, immune-mediated liver damage
What other conditions is cholangiohepatitis usually seen in conjunction with?
IBD and/or pancreatitis
What is a major clinical sign of cholangiohepatitis?
Icterus
How will bloodwork be affected by cholangiohepatitis?
Elevated GGT and elevated bilirubin
What histopathologic changes are assoc. w/cholangiohepatitis?
Infiltration of neutrophils into portal areas
How do you treat cholangiohepatitis?
Urodeoxycholic acid, Vit E, milk thistle for 2mo w/abx
How do you surgically decompress a cholangiohepatitis 2* to biliary obstruction?
biliary-to-intestinal diversion
What is the prognosis for cholangiohepatitis?
Fair in dogs, half of cats do poorly (3mo MST)
How do you ddx cholangiohepatitis from lymphocytic portal hepatitis?
Histopath
What histopathologic changes are assoc. w/lymphocytic portal hepatitis?
Infiltration of lymphocytes and plasma cells into portal areas but not bile ducts
What is the prognosis for lymphocytic portal hepatitis?
Good (MST 2yr)
What is fatty liver syndrome?
Hepatic lipidosis
What liver enzyme is NOT elevated w/hepatic lipidosis?
GGT
How will hepatic lipidosis appear on ultrasound?
Enlarged w/hyperechoic parenchyma
What will you see on cytology of hepatic lipidosis?
Clusters of hepatocytes w/cytoplasmic lipid droplets
How do you treat hepatic lipidosis?
Feeding tube immediately, Vit K1, L-carnitine
Why should a feeding tube be placed in a hepatic lipidosis patient as soon as possible?
Nutritional support decreases mortality from 90% to 30%
How does neomycin and lactulose help treat hepatic lipidosis?
Decreases hepatic encephalopathy
