Microbiology Flashcards
Microbiology
The study of small living things(fungus, viruses, bacteria)
Bacteria
Larger than viruses
Simple, single-celled: ni nucleus
Divided into aerobes (need oxygen) and anaerobes (don’t need oxygen)
Reproduce asexually (clone) (double numbers every 20 minutes)
In order to grow bacteria need
Food
Water
Suitable temperature
Suitable pH
Soil bacteria
Break down (decompose) dead plant and animal material to release nutrients into the soil
Uses of bacteria
Decay wastes, make cheese, yoghurt, insulin and silage
Harmful bacteria
Cause disease, food spoilage and tooth decay
Fungi
Fungal cell similar to plant cell but does not possess chlorophyll (is not green & cannot make food)
Harmful fungi
Cause animal and plant disease, food spoilage and are poisonous
Biotechnology
The use of living things (micro organisms) to make useful substances
Biotechnology
The use of living things (micro-organisms) to make useful substances
MEDICAL biotechnology
Bacteria and fungi used to make antibiotics
Altered organisms are used to make insulin, blood clotting chemicals for haemophiliacs and antibodies
Allows large quantities of cheap product with no dangerous side effects
