Cell Flashcards
Difference between plants and animals: Plants
Have a cell wall
Large, permanent vacuole
Have chloroplasts that control chlorophyll
More definite shape
Difference between plants and animals: Animals
No cell wall
Small temporary vacuole
No chloroplasts
Less definite shape
Protoplasm
Eveeything inside the cell membrane of a cell
Nucleus and cytoplasm
Cytoplasm
Everything in the cell that is outside the nucleus called organelles
Contains cytosin -> fluid part
E.g mitochondria, ribosomes, chloroplasts, vacuoles
Cell membrane
Composed of phospholipids and proteins
Lipid bi-layer
Function of membrane
Retain cell contents
Recognise touching molecules
Control what enters and leaves the cell or selective permeable
Support the cell
Nucleus
Controls the activities in the cell
Contain thread like strcutures called chromosomes
Cytoplasm
Jelly like fluid that surrounds the nucleus and suspends the organelles
Chromatin
The name given to chromosomes when they are elongated and not dividing
Chromosomes
Inside the nucleus
Contain a chemical called deoxy ribonuleic acid
Mitochondria
Respiration occurs
Energy is provided
Each mitochondria has its own loop of DNA
Chloroplasts
Structure only found in plant cells
Contain a green dye called chlorophyll
The site of photosynthesis
Cell Wall
Surrounds cell providing structure + support made of cellulose
Permeable, allowing molecules to move in and out
Ribosomes
Made of RNA + protein
Site of protein synthesis
Proteins are made by combining a sequence of amino acids
Prokaryotic cells
No membrane enclosed organelles
Single celled organelles e.g bacteria
Contain a strand of DNA
