Methods- sampling methods Flashcards
What is random sampling?
Every individual in the survey has an equal chance of being picked for investigation
What is an advantage of random/simple sampling?
No bias- equal chance of being selected
What is the disadvantage of random/simple sampling?
Underepresentation- could be too many people of the same sex gender, ethnicity, social class or age
What is systematic sampling?
Names are selected from the sampling frame at regualr intervals until the sample size is reached
What is an advantage of systematic sampling?
-No bias
-Quick
-Easy
What is the disadvantage of systematic sampling?
-Underepresentitve- findings cannot be generalised
Define stratified random sampling
Attempting to avoid the possible errors caused by simple sampling, subdividing by factors such as ethnicity
What’s the advantage of stratified random sampling?
More likely to be represented as all characteristics in the survey population are more certain to be represented
Define quota sampling
People are selected who fit into certain categories according to their proportion in the survey population
What’s the disadvantage of stratified random sampling?
Complicated
What’s the advantage of quota sampling?
-Select a sample tailored to the study
-Quick
What’s the disadvantage of quota sampling?
-Not representative as the interviewer could be biased
What is multistage/cluster sampleing?
Selecting a sample in various stages each time selecting a sample from the previous sample until the final sample is selected
What is an advantage of cluster sampling?
-Quick
-Easy
What’s a disadvantage of cluster sampling?
-Not representive
