Families and households- life cycle and life course diversity Flashcards
What is the routine life course?
-Living at home
-Leaving school
-Going into a job or higher education
-Settling down into a married or cohabiting couple in your own home
Why are young women less likely than young men to live with their parents?
-More likely to be cohabiting or married
-More likely to be lone parents in their households
-Women are more likely to go into higher education taking them away from home
What are adult kids?
-People who have finished education and are working but live at home as they can’t afford to buy or rent their own
Define the clipped wing generation.
-People who are unable to fly out of the family nest and establish their own identity
What are kippers?
people who stay at home by choice as it is cheaper and easier for them even if it means they are eating into their parent’s savings
What is kidulthood?
The transition period between moving out to living back in a shared household/ their parent’s house
Why are shared households becoming more common?
-High costs of buying/renting
-Growing number of people entering higher education
-The desire for young people to live in different arrangements rather than settling down into a conventional couple household
What is life cycle diversity?
Refers to the way families changed through life
Why is there life cycle diversity?
-Family income changes
-Children go from dependent to independent
-Childcare fees
-Participation in paid employment varies (particularly for women as they are the main caregiver)

Who are the authors of Life Course?
-Allan + Crow (2001)
-Levin (2004)
What do Allan and Crow say?
-Family life cycle and life course have changed dramatically
-In the past family life cycle took the form of set stages with young people growing up in two-parent nuclear families and this cycle would continue with their children
-Now young people face more uncertainty in their personal lives about what they should do and when
What does Levin say?
-This life course was ‘compulsory’ because of strong social norms and it was the proper way to live your life
